Yes it’s true, today as I was driving down Baseline Road near 51st Ave/Baseline Rd, I couldn't believe my eyes there I saw a LA Fitness booth setup on the south/east corner of 51st Ave/Baseline Road. I stopped my car and my friend asked the LA Fitness rep what the booth was for. The LA Fitness rep told him that a Safeway and LA Fitness were opening up and they were there taking membership applications. Great news for Laveen Residents!!!!!!

That is great news, being that the only gyms currently in the area are Curves. I just hope other gyms follow in their footsteps and open in Laveen, so that this LA Fitness doesn't become jam packed due to it being the only one in the area. Thanks for the good news!!!
I'm so glad to hear that. I seen them out there trying to get members. Any word on the facilities such as pool, sauna etc.? Is it going to be by Sonic or by Walgreens?
Anyone know when the LA Fitness in Laveen is going to open at 51st & Baseline?
Buyer Beware - I contacted Corporate office and they don't even show that a La Fitness is going to be built yet. The La Fitness corporate office stated that there should be no pre-sales in our area until 3-6 prior to opening. I picked up a membership after being told that our Laveen La Fitness was going to be opened in 3-4 months the sales rep guaranteed and I have paid 2 months of membership dues. I'm now go to cancel this membership and I will join the Fitness One on 35Th ave and Baseline.
I call corporate and they told me that it will be like the one on 7th st and green way, about 40,000 sq ft with pool basket ball etc, they also said that is the standart size with two levels
I also when on line and saw the map plan for it, I just don`t think it will open in 2-3 month I think it will take at least 6 to 8 month to open.
i 'm very excited about LA fitness near me, but now i heard that they might be thinking about not doing it and lookin more towards target on baseline? i hope this is not true, since 24 hr fitness has plans there too.
I just received an email from my HOA-Blockwatch that according to the planners not enough people are showing interest at the La fitness booth, in my case i haven't signed up yet, i was waiting for them to start breaking ground, but now i'm even more hessitant.
does anyone else have more info?
I called the company that owns the land and they told me that they are still planning on opening by 2nd qtr of 2009. Ground breaking should not be until later this year.
I too remember seeing a guy with an LA Fitness table where the Safeway was going up. He told us that LA Fitness was being built, not a Safeway because, get this: "Safeway has no money; so they are building where we were, and LA Fitness will be building here next to the B of A". I hope people didn't buy memberships based on that information, since as many of you can see, it's a Safeway that's almost done, not an LA Fitness. I was really hoping for LA to open this year, guess I will wait till 2nd qtr 2009.
i did some research on the LA fitness a while back and i remember finding the lot plans for it on a builder's website. The lafitness was going to be built behind the walgreens, NOT near safeway. If i can find the .pdf file from the builder again, i will post it up here.
Here is the link to the builders site and the reference to the l.a. fitness i had seen:

That's great news! I'm tired of driving out of town to workout...
Thanks for the link, ABK Realty Team. It makes more sense that it'd be over near Walgreens rather than over at Safeway, since there doesn't seem to be enough space for a 40,000 sq ft building near Safeway.
every one should check out that link from abka realty!!
It shows how the site will look like and it looks realy nice
where is that 24 hour fitness going to be built?
At one time there were plans to build a 24 hour fitness on either on 24th street and baseline or 19th ave and baseline ( i can't remember the intersection). But i heard from a friend that lives close by in south central phoenix that they aren't going to build it anymore. Does anyone have any info on the 24 hour fitness?
-Atin
My husband works in that shopping center, they aren't building the 24 hour fitness because the south mountain chamber of commerce doesn't want any 24 hour facilities over there.
I live in Laveen, and I just got a flyer from LA Fitness in the mail today. Under the locations listing, there's a box that says "Upcoming Preview Center: Laveen." I don't know exactly what that means, but at least they still have some presence in Laveen.
Did these guys tell you what LA Fitness they were from. Because it is actually a way to sign people up at another location. What these guys do is get behind in sales at a certain location. Then what they do is set up a tent so you can sign up to their location with the intent of a new location being built. DO NOT SIGN UP. IT IS ACTUALLY ILLEGAL.
On 12/28/2008 I emailed a guy named James from the development company (Diversified Partners) about the status of the LA Fitness. Jame's responding by stating the following, "This project is on hold for now, the developer is trying to to work through some issues with the Landowners. I don’t have an estimate as to when it will be built any longer."
I am not sure what this means. My guess is that they probably agree on terms a while back. Due to the economic condition we are in the terms may need to be adjusted. If anyone hears something about this please post, very interested.
Regards,
Louis
UGH! This is VERY diappointing! I was REALLY looking forward to a fitness club nearby, that also offer childcare! - I guess my hopes are put on hold! Boohoo!
i just moved from central phoenix and i was so glad to hear that there was LA fitness down the street from me. But i m sure some of the economic conditions are on hold to re negotiate the lease or term by the landowners. hoepfully its before summer hits hard lol
This is very dissapointing. I signed up at the LA fitness on 75th Ave & Thomas because they told me about the "NEW" location in Laveen. Now it's a "MAYBE?" I'm gonna get a hold of corporate. If they don't get a good response, I'm gonna cancel my membership.
I too signed up over a year ago at the LA fitness on chandler ave. only because I was told their building one on 51st ave. and Baseline. I am SO over LA fitness. Would someone, anyone please build a gym on the side of town!!!
Someone should tell a gym (any gym) there's a brand new, empty building at 35th ave. and Southern. It's the brand new Mervens building (they went out of buisness) I don't think they were in there over two months. It would be perfect for a gym!!!
I purchased a membership at the 75th ave and thomas location because of the new location I was told was going to open on 51st ave and baseline. I stopped my electronic debit because they have been withdrawing money since oct. of 2008. for a membership to a facility that is not on 51st ave and baseline. There is 2 other clubs closer than the L.A. fitness on 75th and Thomas. I called them back at corporate because they left me a message once they could not debit my account. I called them and I was made to be the bad guy because once you sign up at a location that location becomes your "home" club. Everyone at corporate stated they have never heard of my situation before but thanks to this blog I know I'm not alone. I want to be reimbursed my 280.00 for membership dues. Onyone have anything else let me know. Thanks, I also gave this website to corporate in hopes they catch the (piece - -) GOOD EMPLOYEE who set this illegal operation up!
Randy,
I think it is horrible what they have done. In the spring of 2008 I remember seeing LA Fitness representatives on the southwest corner of Baseline and 51st Ave selling memberships. They said the LA Fitness would be in by August of 2008 and the expected location would be on the southwest corner, where the Safeway is now located. How could they not know a Safeway was going in there? I imagine there are so many people who paid for a membership, expecting the gym to go in and it didn't happen. They should refund your money.
I follow a local blog of a guy who reports on topics affecting the Laveen community. In April, 2009, he explained the current status of LA Fitness in the area: http://www.ourlifeinlaveen.com/search?q=fitness
It is now August so I am sure there has been progress since.
Excuse me, my above post should say southeast corner, not southwest. The southwest corner is where Walgreens is located and I believe this is actually the expected location, assuming all goes in.
Okay, so I followed-up with Diversified Partners, the company responsible for developing the proposed LA Fitness location in Laveen. I asked what the status was and received the following note:
"I appreciate your persistence. That project has, however, been placed on hold due to the current economic situation. LA fitness still has interest in the location but we don’t expect to move forward for the next 12 months. There is a bit of heartburn on the proposed freeway through the region that justifies the placement of the anchor. It is here http://www.azcentral.com/community/ahwatukee/articles/2009/08/04/20090804smfreeway0804.html"
Looks like we will be waiting quite a while.
Any gyms out there listening?!?!?! Please open a gym on 51st and Baseline.... WE need one badly, traveling to Lifetime is getting a little time consuming!!!!
Well folks, something is happening at 51st and Baseline Rd; the area behind the Walgreens is fenced off and a lot of activity is happening; so someone, maybe LA Fitness(?) is breaking ground and there are stakes marking out a footprint. Since it's almost the whole lot; it looks like some anchor location is starting to build. Let's hope it's the LA Fitness!
We are going to have LA Fitness at 51st ave and Baseline Rd. Just confirmed with 6KSWPPP.COM who is levelling the ground..
Confirmation! They made an announcement on the Laveen city website. You can check it out at www.laveen.org. Looks like construction won't be done until late this year.
Yay!!! We've only been waiting since we moved here in '03!
